Persistent Heartburn as an Indicator for Acid Reflux Complications
Heartburn is a symptom characteristic to many disorders of the gastrointestinal tract and it can also be a sign of heart disease. However, heartburn is most commonly experienced by gastro-esophageal disease (acid reflux) sufferers. Heartburn is a sensation of soreness and burning, generally located in the central region of the chest. Accompanied by inflamed throat, difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing, heartburn is frequently experienced by people with acid reflux. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as acid reflux, involves regurgitation of the stomach’s content inside the upper levels of the esophagus. Due to increased pressure at the level of the abdomen,...

Silent Acid Reflux
Sometimes people do not realize that acid reflux is a problem for them. This may be referred to as silent acid reflux. A prescribed silent acid reflux remedy may be no different from those prescribed for common acid reflux, but diagnosis is sometimes more difficult. Many people believe that heartburn and acid reflux are synonymous, but in silent acid reflux, heartburn is frequently not a symptom. It may seem strange that a silent acid reflux remedy may be an antacid or other medication to prevent or reduce stomach acid, because most people think of these as heartburn remedies. But, silent acid reflux is caused by the same stomach acid that causes heartburn. There are two different...

The Causes of Acid Reflux
Acid reflux is a problem that plagues many Americans, causing them pain and discomfort. Commonly referred to as GERD, acid reflux is the term used to describe gastroesophageal reflux disorder. An uncomfortable and often painful condition where a person’s stomach liquid backs up or “refluxes” into his esophagus, acid reflux is the cause for pain, agitation, and discomfort in many Americans. Although many people recognize that they suffer from this chronic condition, some people don’t really take time to consider where the problem stems from. Perhaps you have already found an over-the-counter drug, a prescription medication, or even a natural remedy to ease your...

The most common ways to recognize acid reflux disease

Author: John Mancini

The body has an armory of ways to prevent acid reflux disease but if any of these are prevented from occurring the body has very few mechanisms left to alleviate the suffering that is associated with the chronic disease. Most reflux occurs during the daytime, but during the day the top halves of our body are upright meaning that the reflux automatically flows back down to the stomach and any problems are prevented. While we are awake we regularly swallow and this action services to carry an reflux back down to where it belongs. We swallow whether there is reflux present or not. The mouth constantly creates saliva that contains chemicals that neutralize the effects of reflux and acid on our bodies. These three methods are the most effective defense we have against acid reflux disease but sometimes they don't work properly or simply aren't doing enough to prevent the onslaught of acid reflux.

Biopsies can be used to search for the existence of cancer. They can not be used to look for evidence of acid reflux disease but alternative causes of symptoms may be found.

Esophageal acid testing is probably the most accurate way to test for acid reflux disease but is the most obtrusive as well. A tube is placed through the nose and into the esophagus where it remains for 24 hours. This tube has a sensor on the end and measures the amount of reflux generated over 24 hours.

An endoscopy is another way of diagnosing acid reflux disease. A tube is swallowed so that doctors can see exactly what is going on inside your body. However, a esophagus of a patient suffering from the disease ordinarily looks quite normal so this method of diagnosis will only directly work for those patients whose esophagus has been damaged by their acid reflux disease. However, if an ulcer or other ailment that can cause similar problems is spotted then it may be possible to discount acid reflux disease.

Heartburn is by far the most common symptom of acid reflux disease and if a doctor suspects your heartburn is cause by acid reflux disease he or she will prescribe you with a medicine that stops the production of acid in your stomach. If it stops then it is assumed that you do indeed have acid reflux disease. This approach of diagnosis can be unreliable.

General Facts about Acid Reflux
Acid reflux is a very disturbing condition and in some cases it can even become severe. Left untreated, the condition usually becomes chronic, its symptoms reoccurring after certain periods of time. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease, also referred to as acid reflux, is a physiological condition that causes the regurgitation of the stomach content into the esophagus and throat. Acid reflux is very common and may occur due to inappropriate diet, stress and unhealthy lifestyle. Some people are frequently confronted with acid reflux and in time they can develop serious complications. Physiological abnormalities seem to be the main cause for acid reflux (weakness of the lower esophageal sphincter, uncontrolled contractions of the sphincter, low pressure at the bottom of the esophagus due to abnormal positioning of the sphincter, etc). People who suffer from acid reflux as a consequence of physiological abnormalities can only overcome their condition through the means of ongoing medical treatment or surgery. The best way of controlling the condition is through the means of good diet. Appropriate diet has a great importance in preventing and controlling acid reflux. Due to the fact that excessive production of stomach digestive fluids also contributes to the condition, an appropriate diet can ameliorate the symptoms of acid reflux. A good diet should exclude: foods that are rich in fat, milk, caffeine-based products, spicy foods, fried foods, alcoholic beverages and smoking. Other means of controlling the symptoms of acid reflux are medications and surgery. Medical treatments include all kinds of drugs (antacids, histamine antagonists, proton pump inhibitors, etc) that can be effective in preventing the gastric acids from reaching inside the esophagus. Surgery provides...
